A 129-HECTARE chunk of protected conservation land near Virginia Water will be ‘released’ from the green belt in order to be used for housing.
The decision was made by Runnymede Borough Council’s planning committee when it met at the Civic Centre, Addlestone, on Wednesday night (February 22).
The committee reluctantly followed their officer’s recommendations to remove the former DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency) site’s green belt status, freeing it up to allow enough development for RBC to meet new housing targets.
An exact number for how many homes could be built on the site has not been agreed but figures from 1,500 to 2,500 have been suggested, the latter being in accordance with the targets.
