In 2005 the first Residents Network community email distribution list was established in Deepcut.
Since then the Residents Network rolled out similar email lists for the Heatherside, Parkside and Lightwater. All the lists have been incredibly successful with local residents using them on a daily basis. The current lists have several thousand local subscribers and growing daily.
Email distribution lists are a very powerful way of getting information out to the community very quickly and are used for a variety of uses such as:
- Residents asking for recommendations for tradesmen
- The Police for appeals and publicising surgeries and panel meetings
- Publicising public meetings and community events
- Warning residents to avoid trouble spots such as traffic congestion following collisions
- Residents asking for advice
- Gathering support for epetitions & community campaigns
There posibilities are endless for what the lists are used for. For instance during the snow over the last few years, the email lists were used to identify 4×4 owners who might be able to assist in doing shopping of basic provisions for the vulnerable or take people to urgent doctors/hospital appointments. In fact when we had the first bad snow a few years ago, we identified 8 volunteers within a few hours of the email going out.
As a result of this huge success, the Residents network has now rolled out email lists for every village/town in the borough*.
Subscribing too and using the lists is completely free and they are all effectively moderated to ensure inappropriate material does not land in residents in-boxes. The lists work in a very simple way.
Each list has a generic email address. For example the Camberley email list address is camberley-residents@googlegroups.com . Anyone subscribed to this list can send an email to this address and it will reach everyone who is subscribed to that list.
Remember you can only send an email to a list that you have subscribed too. Full details of all the lists available and how to subscribe to them are here.
There is no limits to how many lists you can join or how many emails you can send (within reason) to the lists .
As the lists grow in subscribers the more useful and effective they are, so make sure you tell all your neighbours and local friends about them.
